Social attitudes towards drunk driving are changing for the better
Posted by The Breathalyzer Team on 2/2/2010 to General Information
For people who are old enough to remember, going back 30 or 40 years drunk driving was not a big deal at all.  It was not uncommon to see a number of people leaving a party or social function that were visibly past the point where they could operate a car safely.  Luckily, times have changed and drunk driving is not only frowned upon in a social setting but the penalties have become much more severe.

Awareness about the dangers of drunk driving has become much more prevalent. Thanks goes to organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving that have made it a goal to change the way people think about drunk driving.  Police forces are also assisting and most kids that are going through high school now will have a visit from a police officer at some point the shows them what a breathalyzer is and talks to them about what a bad idea it is to drive drunk.

Everybody can have an influence on drunk driving and help to reduce it in one way or another.  Even if you never touch a drop, you can have an effect on other people’s behaviour.  If you are hosting a party, it is partly your responsibility to ensure that your guests don’t leave drunk and try to drive home.  It’s a great idea to have a personal breathalyzer on hand that you can use to test people on the way out.  There’s no need to make it an uncomfortable situation; simply hand it to them as they are leaving and suggest that they give it a try.

The advantages to having a personal breathalyzer on hand to do an alcohol test not only will reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road right at that time but it will help to raise awareness when people see these breathalyzer devices used more commonly.  The more often somebody uses a personal breathalyzer the less it will seem like a big deal.

The accuracy of the personal breathalyzer test devices has increased in the past few years.  They are now available with both semiconductor and fuel cell technology.  The semiconductor versions like the AlcoMate® Prestige AL6000 - Personal Alcohol Breathalyzer have been around for quite a while and they are accurate but they fuel cell models are even better.  The price of the technology has also gone down so it is quite affordable to own one or even more.  When you consider the enormous costs of either an accident caused by drunk driving or even a drunk driving criminal charge having a personal breathalyzer is a much better deal.

Because the prices have gone down and it is so easy to get a personal breathalyzer that is accurate and reliable, you may want to leave one in every car.  You can put it in a place where it will be noticed and whenever you or a family member goes to drive you will see that breathalyzer and if you have had a few drinks it will remind you to give yourself an alcohol test.  It’s a decision that may save someone’s life one day.
